nelson returns!
On Sunday, March 9th, the NHCS, in collaboration with St. John’s Anglican Church, had the immense honor of hosting a joint event commemorating both the return of the St. John's Parish Register to the St. John's Anglican Church and the unveiling of a replica of Horatio Nelson's uniform that was donated to the NHCS.
After undergoing meticulous restoration by experts at the Borthwick Institute at the University of York, the St. John’s Parish Register was officially returned to its home at St. John's Anglican Church. This treasured document holds records of births, marriages and deaths dating back to the 1700s—including the marriage certificate of Horatio Nelson and Fanny Nisbett. In the second half of the ceremony, we proudly unveiled a stunning replica of Horatio Nelson’s uniform, generously donated to NHCS by The 1805 Club.
We extend a heartfelt thank you to the following for making this momentous occasion possible: Deputy Governor General, Her Honor Mrs Hyleeta Liburd; the Office of the Premier, Nevis Island Administration; Captain John Rodgaard, USN (Ret) and Dr Judith Pearson of The 1805 Club; the Nevis Cultural Development Foundation; Curator emerita and textile/costume expert Tina Bates; NHCS staff & volunteers; and our dedicated partners at St. John’s Anglican Church.
